You:

No matter of the style, the size of your handbag will have an influence on how your body looks in line with it.

Some general advice:
Handbags should be worn in the bend of your waist and not slung low at your hip. Purses that hang down around your hip visually add girth to that area and make you look shorter. A handbag that fits under your arm and sits at the bend of your waist makes you look taller and shapelier.

Tiny handbags make you look larger and an oversized bag can make you look like you're carrying luggage. An exception to this is the oversized fashion handbag. These handbags work on the same principal as the over-sized bag is meant to make the carrier look more petite. Slim celebrities such as Nicole Richie, Mary Kate Olsen, Mischa Barton and Paris Hilton all look like tiny waifs when they carry these bags. But is the oversized bag just a fad that will fade?
The truth is that as we are getting more environmentally conscious and less inclined to use plastic bags, a large bag is something that we need. Although we do not want to fill it to the brim, the knowledge that we can if we need to is great.

Here are some tips depending on your figure:
For the petite woman: Clutch-bags and smaller baguette bags really suit your frame. Whatever handbags you choose, the handles should be not too long, so that the bag emphasizes your waste favorably. In general your handbag should be simple and not clutter your look.

Women with fuller figures:
You really wear the over-sized fashion bags well. The bag you go for should both be wide and deep, as small bags will only emphasize your fullness in their contrast to your body. Make sure your handbag does not sit on the fullest part of your body. Try and keep it away from your body by carrying it in your hand, in the bend of your arm, or dropped low at your knees.

Taller Women:
You really have it easy as most bags will flatter you, although it might be difficult to carry of really small or large bags. Intricate bags with prints and details work well against your height, as do bags with long shoulder straps.

Women with Larger Busts or Hips:
You should avoid Hobo Bags and other bags that are “shapeless”. Try carrying a bag made from firm material to contrast your “softness” and never let the bag rest on your hip unless you want to accentuate them!

Average size woman:
Most bag styles and sizes will flatter you. Avoid extremes – except for fashion reasons. There is not much you can do wrong as far as size is concerned!

At the end of the day, always buy the bag you love, because when you feel confident about your outfit, it shows and makes all the rules null and void. A great bag that suits you is a great extension of your style, and an easy way to express your personality. Your perfect bag might be out there without you suspecting it – so go out there and find it!
